Why Is My Anthurium Losing Its Veins?

Understanding weak, faint or less dramatic veining on new Anthurium leaves — and why one leaf rarely tells the whole story.

If you grow velvet-leaf Anthuriums such as Anthurium crystallinum, Anthurium magnificum, Anthurium forgetii, Anthurium warocqueanum or their hybrids, there is a good chance the veins are one of the reasons you fell in love with them in the first place.

Those bright silver veins against a deep green, almost black velvet leaf are what give many Anthuriums their unmistakable “esqueleto” or skeleton-like appearance.

So when a new leaf emerges with weaker, fewer or much less noticeable veins, it can be alarming.

“Has something gone wrong with my Anthurium?”

In most cases, one less-veined leaf does not mean your Anthurium has suddenly lost its ability to produce beautiful foliage.

The appearance of Anthurium venation is influenced by a combination of genetics, plant maturity, leaf development, light, hydration, nutrition and the conditions the plant experienced while that leaf was developing.

The newest leaf is not necessarily a reflection of the conditions your plant is experiencing today.

The major veins, including the midrib and secondary veins, are established during early development. After that, the developing leaf continues to expand.

But there is an important distinction:

Light does not simply “make veins white”.

“Where did all the veins go?”

Wait.

Give the leaf time to harden.

Or the genetics of that particular hybrid may simply express differently on different leaves.

One leaf is a snapshot.

The real story is told by the leaves that come after it.

So before you panic over a slightly less-veined new leaf, give it time to harden.

And then the one after that.
