What Is an Anthurium Growth Point?
Learn what the growth point actually is, where to find it, how new leaves develop, and what collectors should check before buying a valuable Anthurium.
If you have ever looked closely at an Anthurium and wondered where the next leaf actually comes from, the answer is hidden right in the centre of the plant: the growth point.
In collector language, the growth point is the small central area responsible for continuing the plant's shoot growth. Botanically, the key structure is the shoot apical meristem (SAM) — a specialised region of actively dividing cells that initiates new leaves and other shoot structures.
This is why the growth point matters so much when buying Anthuriums. A plant can have beautiful mature leaves, impressive roots and excellent colour, but if the growing apex is badly damaged or rotting, its future growth can be very different from what you expect.
1. What is the Anthurium growth point?
The shoot apical meristem is the real growth point
The shoot apical meristem is a small population of specialised cells at the growing tip of the shoot. These cells continuously produce new tissues as the plant develops.
One of its most important jobs is initiating leaf primordia — tiny early structures that eventually develop into leaves.
Growth point → leaf primordium → developing leaf → petiole + leaf blade
In a mature Anthurium, the same growing region is tucked inside the central crown and surrounded by young leaves and protective cataphylls. That means you usually cannot see the actual meristem itself — you see the structures it is producing.
2. Where does a new Anthurium leaf come from?
This can be confusing because the visible position of the growth point changes as the plant develops.
Young Anthuriums
On a young Anthurium, the next leaf can appear to be emerging directly from the base of the previous petiole. You may notice a small swelling, sheath or pointed emerging structure tucked beside the newest leaf.
This is one reason the growth point can be difficult to identify on seedlings and small juveniles. It is not necessarily a dramatic central spike like you might see on a large mature specimen.

Mature Anthuriums

New leaves are initiated close together around the apex and are protected during development by cataphylls. These can make the growth point look like a small central spear, cone or cluster of tightly packed new growth.
3. Why is the growth point so important?
The shoot apical meristem is effectively the plant's continuing shoot-growth centre. As long as it remains healthy, it can keep initiating new leaves and extending the plant's normal growth sequence.
If that growing region is severely damaged, the plant cannot simply repair the original apex and continue exactly as before.
Damage can happen through:
- Physical injury or accidental cutting.
- Crown damage.
- Persistent water sitting around the growing point.
- Rot spreading into the crown.
- Severe mechanical damage during shipping or handling.
However, losing the main growth point does not automatically mean the entire Anthurium is dead. If viable nodes remain lower down the stem, the plant may produce a lateral or axillary shoot and continue growing from another point.

4. What happens if an Anthurium loses its growth point?
The outcome depends on how much of the plant remains alive and whether there are viable nodes capable of producing another shoot.
A viable node remains
A lower stem node may activate and produce a new lateral shoot. Over time, the plant can become branched or multi-crowned.
The crown is badly damaged
If the main apex and surrounding tissues are extensively damaged and there are no viable nodes capable of producing new growth, recovery becomes much more uncertain.
This is especially relevant when buying collector plants. A damaged apex does not necessarily mean you are buying a dead plant, but it can mean you are buying a plant with a very different future growth pattern.
5. How to find the growth point when buying an Anthurium
This is one of the most useful things you can learn as an Anthurium collector.
Instead of looking only at the current leaves, inspect the area that will produce the next generation of leaves.
Find the centre of the crown
On a mature plant, look for the tight central area where the newest cataphylls and emerging leaves are developing.
Look for active new growth
A healthy plant may have a new spear, cataphyll or emerging leaf developing from the centre. The newest growth is often lighter or softer in colour than fully hardened foliage.
Check the tissue itself
The crown should look firm and structurally sound. Be cautious around tissue that is obviously soft, collapsing, blackening or producing a foul smell.
Check the newest petiole on juveniles
On smaller plants, the growing region can be much less obvious. Inspect the base of the newest petiole and surrounding sheath for signs of continuing growth.
6. What does a healthy growth point look like?
You are not looking for one particular shape because Anthuriums vary considerably in architecture. Instead, look for a combination of firm tissue, intact developing structures and evidence that the plant is still actively producing growth.
Green flags ✓
- Firm central tissue.
- Intact emerging leaf or cataphyll.
- Normal-looking new growth.
- No obvious black or mushy tissue.
- No foul smell.
- Evidence of recent or continuing growth.
Red flags ⚠
- Soft or collapsing crown tissue.
- Black or rapidly browning tissue.
- Strong rotten smell.
- Repeatedly collapsing or aborted new growth.
- Obvious physical damage to the apex.
- Missing or severely compromised growing centre.
7. Don't confuse a normal new leaf with a damaged growth point
This is particularly important for beginners because Anthurium new growth can look strange before it opens.
A developing leaf may be tightly rolled, pale, pointed or partially hidden inside a cataphyll. That does not automatically mean something is wrong.
Likewise, a leaf that is temporarily stuck does not necessarily mean the growth point has failed. Environmental conditions can interfere with leaf emergence and unfurling.

8. Crown rot is the growth point's biggest enemy
Because the growth point sits in the centre of developing foliage, prolonged moisture around the crown can become a serious problem when combined with poor airflow and damaged tissue.
Warning signs include:
- Soft or mushy tissue at the centre.
- Darkening or blackening of the crown.
- A foul smell.
- New growth repeatedly collapsing.
- Leaves or developing structures becoming unusually loose at their base.

9. Why collectors should inspect the growth point before buying
When buying a rare Anthurium, you are not simply buying the leaves that are already there. You are buying the plant's future growth potential.
This is particularly important with valuable clones and mature specimens where much of the appeal comes from the foliage the plant is expected to produce as it continues developing.
A healthy root system is important. A beautiful leaf is important. A strong stem is important.
But the growth point is what keeps the shoot moving forward.
The leaves show you what the Anthurium has already produced. The growth point gives you a clue about what it can produce next.

10. What should you ask a seller?
If you are purchasing an expensive Anthurium remotely, photographs of the leaves alone are not enough.
Ask for a close-up of the growing centre and, if appropriate, ask:
- “Can you show me the growth point?”
- “Is the current spear actively growing?”
- “Has the crown ever had rot or physical damage?”
- “Is this the original growing point?”
- “Has the plant recently been cut or re-rooted?”
These questions become increasingly important as the price of the plant increases.
A close-up photograph of the growth point can tell you something that a perfect photograph of the largest leaf simply cannot.
11. Growth point vs leaf quality: which matters more?
Ideally, you want both.

- Strong rotten smell.
- Central growing area appears badly damaged.
- Repeated failed or collapsing growth.
- Seller cannot provide a clear growth-point photograph on a high-value plant.
14. The collector's takeaway
The Anthurium growth point is not just another part of the plant. It is the specialised growing region that continuously initiates new shoot structures, including leaves.
On mature plants, it is generally hidden within the central crown and surrounded by developing foliage and cataphylls. On young plants, it can be much less obvious and may appear to be associated with the base of the newest petiole.
The most important thing to remember is that you do not need to see the actual meristem to judge whether the growth point appears healthy. Instead, look for the evidence it leaves behind: intact developing growth, firm tissue and continued leaf production.
